Thunderstorm Alert: IMD Flags Risky Weather Across Uttar Pradesh

If you’re anywhere in Uttar Pradesh this week, keep an umbrella close—you might need it at any moment. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) just sounded the alarm for a spell of wild weather, starting 27 May and stretching right through to 2 June. What’s brewing? The mix includes not only light to moderate showers but also thunderstorms, unpredictable lightning bolts, and gusty winds strong enough to rattle windows and snap weak branches.

This burst of dramatic weather isn’t coming out of nowhere. Cyclonic circulations spinning over central west Madhya Pradesh and south Chhattisgarh are the main culprits, while a weather trough lines up from southeast Rajasthan right through to north Chhattisgarh. This whole system has its crosshairs on Uttar Pradesh, meaning western parts could see the most intense action. Come 31 May, those in western UP could face thundersquall winds howling at up to 70 kmph. That’s not the kind of breeze you want to ignore.

The IMD hasn’t ruled out surprises either. Although hailstorms aren’t on the agenda for most of UP, they could pop up in neighboring Himachal Pradesh, mainly between 27 and 28 May. Folks nearby might hear some reports of hail, adding to the dramatic skies across northern India.

This wild weather isn’t keeping itself within state borders. Rajasthan will see isolated showers on 29 and 30 May, while parts of Punjab are looking at thundersquall winds from 27 May. Haryana and Delhi can expect similar blustery conditions on 30 and 31 May. If you’re heading into Uttarakhand, pack for the wet weather—isolated heavy rainfall is forecast there every day from 28 May to 2 June.

The sky isn’t the only thing changing—temperatures are on a rollercoaster. In northwest India, you’ll notice the mercury climbing 2-3°C above normal over just a couple of days, making afternoons feel extra sticky and uncomfortable. After this brief spike, a cooldown is expected. Over in central India, the temperature rise starts a little later, but keep an eye out for more hot days after a three-day wait.

The IMD describes the current situation as hot and humid, especially where the mercury sits 3°C higher than usual and humidity just refuses to budge. These steamy, heavy days can make it tough to stay comfortable—and quick changes in temperature can catch people off guard, especially when sudden showers sweep through.

For now, the best advice is simple—keep watch for IMD updates, don’t ignore warnings, and if a storm is rolling in, stay inside and play it safe. This week in UP, it’s all about expecting the unexpected in the skies above.
