Sitaare Zameen Par: A New Box Office Force for Aamir Khan

For anyone tracking Bollywood’s ever-changing landscape, there’s no missing the latest surge: Sitaare Zameen Par is making a thunderous comeback for Aamir Khan. After a somewhat lukewarm reception for his previous project, the superstar returned with a bang. On day two, the family drama doubled its opening cash haul, pulling in ₹21.50 crore net from India alone—nearly twice its day one collection of ₹10.70 crore. That’s an 88.79% jump, a figure that leaves even veteran industry watchers impressed.

In just 48 hours, the film’s net total in India hit ₹32.20 crore. While the opening was solid, Saturday’s ballooning collections really tell the story: word-of-mouth has clearly landed. This momentum hasn’t been the norm for Aamir over the past decade. His last two big releases—Laal Singh Chaddha and Kesari 2—managed only ₹18.96 crore and ₹17.5 crore respectively at the two-day mark. Now, Sitaare Zameen Par is clearing those numbers with room to spare.

Why the Big Leap?

Why the Big Leap?

So what’s changed? For starters, Sitaare Zameen Par’s blend of nostalgia and fresh storytelling is striking a genuine chord. Touted as a spiritual successor to Aamir’s beloved Taare Zameen Par, fans walked in with high expectations—and by all accounts, most left moved by the performances. Genelia Deshmukh, Brijendra Kala, and Dolly Ahluwalia round out the cast, bringing warmth and depth under R.S. Prasanna’s direction.

Internationally, the story gets even bigger. In India, the movie has grossed ₹37 crore in total, but overseas, it’s already notched ₹13 crore. That brings its total global haul to a cool ₹50 crore in just two days. Compare that to the likes of Dangal and PK. While those titans opened huge, their day-two jumps were noticeably smaller—their box office tales played out over weeks. Sitaare Zameen Par is sprinting out of the gate with an energy that’s hard to ignore.

Audiences aren’t the only ones showering praise. Critics too have highlighted the film’s emotional beats and soulful performances—two things that Bollywood fans never tire of. This cocktail of buzz and critical support has led to packed Saturday shows, especially in urban centers. For many, it’s a welcome return for Aamir Khan, who needed a big hit after some turbulent years in the spotlight.

With the weekend far from over, all eyes are on how Sitaare Zameen Par sustains its numbers into Sunday and beyond. But one thing is clear: Bollywood’s Mr. Perfectionist is back in the race, and he’s making it look easy—for now.
